Supply of advertising material

  • PDF 1.4 (“Acrobat 5”) is the preferred format for ads. There are some specific requirements for PDF to be acceptable; see the technical specifications for PDF below.
Ready-to-print PDF ads should be sent via our YouSendIt dropbox, or for QuickCut/AdSend/AdStream customers, via Quickcut to “Post Newspapers (WA)“.
Please don’t send ads by email; it’s unreliable and slow, so we might not get your ad until after deadline. No refunds are offered if you email an ad and it doesn’t reach us in time – so please use YouSendIt or QuickCut.
  • We also accept raster image files in TIFF or similar format so long as they are 200dpi at the required physical dimensions for print. Text may not look as good if you supply us with a raster image.

Application colour settings

To achieve the best reproduction of your artwork you will need to configure your applications to our press colour specifications. Exactly what you need to depends on the kind of computer you’re using and what programs you use. The instructions below cover the most common cases.

Colour setup instructions

  1. Download the settings files:
  2. Install the colour profile:
    • Please note: Just installing this profile will not change any of your settings in any program. It only offers you the ability to use our colour settings if you choose to.
    • Mac users: In the “Go” menu, choose “Open Location”. Paste the following text, without the “quotes”, into the dialog that appears: “/Library/ColorSync/Profiles“. Press the “Go” button. A finder window will appear. Drag the .csf file from your desktop to this folder. Quit and re-load any programs you use for colour work.
    • Windows users: Right-click on the .icc file and choose “install”. You can now delete the file of your desktop.
  3. Install the Creative Suite colour settings. If you do not have Creative Suite, skip this section.
    1. Open Adobe Bridge
    2. Open the Edit menu and pick Creative Suite Colour Settings
    3. In the dialog that appears, click “Show saved colour settings files”. A Finder window will appear.
    4. Drag the .csf file into the new finder window, then close the finder window.
    5. Quit and re-start Bridge
    6. Go back into the Creative Suite Colour Settings dialog in Bridge.
    7. You will see a new option in the settings list called “POSTNews v5”. Click on it and press the “apply” button.
  4. Set up older versions of Adobe Photoshop (without Bridge):If you do not have Photoshop, or you use Photoshop CS 1 or newer, skip this section.
    • You can install the .csf file into your colour settings folder (the exact location of which varies depending on Photoshop version and platform), then pick it from the Colour Settings dialog in the Edit menu of Photoshop.
  5. Install the Distiller JobOptions file:If you do not have Acrobat Distiller, skip this section.
      1. Open Distiller
      2. In the Settings menu, choose “Add Adobe Pdf Settings”
      3. Go to your desktop and double-click on postnews_v2.joboptions.
      4. Now make sure that “Default Settings” in the main distiller window shows “POST Newspapers v2”

Note that you must have the ICC profile correctly installed for the provided joboptions file to work. See step 1.

  6. Set up QuarkXPress:If you do not have QuarkXPress, skip this section. If you have QuarkXPress 6 or older, please use Adobe Photoshop with our settings to convert your images to CMYK TIFF or EPS files before placing them in Quark, as Quark 6 and older have very limited or no colour management support.
    1. For Quark 7 and later, download postnews_quark_eps_v1.quarkstyle and postnews_quark_print_v1.quarkstyle to your desktop.
    2. Open QuarkXPress 7 or later
    3. Close any currently open documents
    4. In the Edit menu, choose Output Styles.
    5. Click on the “Import” button
    6. Find the postnews_quark_eps_v1.quarkstyle file you saved on your desktop and double-click it.
    7. Click “Import” again
    8. Find the postnews_quark_print_v1.quarkstyle file you saved on your desktop and double-click it.
    9. Click the “Save” button
    10. Now, when sending a job from QuarkXPress, you can use “Save Page as EPS…” from the File menu. Make sure to set the EPS settings in the dialog to “POST Newspapers v1 EPS”. Once Quark has created the EPS, you can drag it to the Acrobat Distiller window after making sure the POST’s job options are loaded to run it through Distiller and make a PDF. For regular use, make a watched folder in Distiller with the POST’s job options set as the folder’s joboptions.

Important note: When sending the POST a PDF made from a Quark document, do not use Quark’s built-in PDF export. At least as of Quark 7 it is buggy and unreliable. Instructions for setting it up have not been included here, so it will also use the wrong colour settings. Instead, save an EPS file into a Distiller watched folder set up with the POST’s job options as its folder.joboptions, or print to a virtual PDF printer that uses our joboptions. The POST may reject documents saved using Quark’s PDF Export feature and does not guarantee that they will print correctly.

  7. Microsoft Publisher and Microsoft Word:Microsoft Publisher is not suitable for designing advertising for press output, as it’s PDF output lacks important features required for reliable and colour-accurate printing. We may accept an ad designed in Publisher if you convert it to PDF yourself using Distiller or a free program like PDFCreator, but we cannot guarantee the print quality of the result. We do not accept Microsoft Word documents for print under any circumstances.

Black Overprint:

Our Rips are set to automatically overprint 100% black. If you require black to knockout set it to do so and make it 99.9%

ICC Colour Management:

Our printers’ RIPs do not support ICC colour management, PDF/X-1a or PDF/X-3 – they require untagged CMYK data. The POST’s preflight software will convert supplied PDFs containing non-CMYK data to CMYK using our press profile, but we cannot guarantee the reliable printing of the results. Your colours may change unexpectedly or not reproduce accurately due to the more limited range of colours available on the printing press and the difficulty of accurately determining the intended colour in untagged RGB PDF input. If you want control over colour reproduction, please use our colour settings.

Spot colours

The POST is printed on a four colour press. Spot colours may not be used in artwork, as the press cannot print them. If we receive a job with spot colours the spot may be converted to the nearest available CMYK colour by our preflight software, or the job may be rejected. We do not guarantee that jobs using spot colours will print correctly.
